#AltSummit Recap: Part Two The Seminars

Alt is about design, blogging, ideas and about meeting like-minded people. From the moment you arrive, you feel this buzz in the air. It's simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying to be in the surroundings of so many brilliantly stylish, clever & witty creatives from many backgrounds and geographical areas. One of my favourite parts of Alt was the seminars. We love listening to people talk about their experiences-good, bad, hard, easy...

Day One: We started Alt off with one that we felt was extremely necessary: WORK LIFE BALANCE. Anyone who owns their own business understands how insane life can become IF you let it. So much to do, so little time, its easy to forget that you are not alone.

Panelists were: Brooke Reynolds of Inchmark, Chrysula Winegar, Kathryn Storke Grady of Snippet & Ink, Sarah of Sarah Jane Studios.

Key points of this lecture were:
- staying present in the current moment: unplugging, setting specific time aside for social media and sticking to it.
- it's a juggling act but remember that some balls can be dropped and some cannot (family, friends; LIFE).
- uncluttering life in order to find balance and be creative: Ever find you have 10+ windows open while you're waiting for your email to load? Being "efficient" isn't necessarily being effective.
- addiction: It's time to break up with "GO, GO....GO!!" Creativity is married to inspiration and constantly filling the gaps with stuff to do does not work well.
- set boundaries: consider yourself, your health and your own (realistic) expectations.
- sometimes you have to SAY NO in order to work better.


We headed to Cargoh's sponsored lunch in the main hall, opened our swag bags and found ourselves enthralled with the keynote speakers: Pilar Guzman, Editor-in-Chief of Martha Stewart Living; Deborah Needleman, Editor-in-Chief of The Wall Street Journal Magazine; and Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, Editor-in-Chief of Apartment Therapy.

The talk was entitled The Relationship Between Traditional and New Media. The main point I took from this was whether you're using traditional media (print, radio, television) or new media (webisodes, blogs, tweets): AUTHENTICITY IS KEY. Be yourself, create that voice and make sure it is one that people trust and want to listen to.
